editor's note: The person who sent this set of memories has such a distinctive first and last name, that only his intials are being used to protect his identity. His first note to me was so bleak and so negative that I hesitated to post it. I wrote back, saying surely that must have been some happy times, there must have been some friends and laughter and the things that young boys do, to which he did reply. In any event, it seems appropriate to present RW's not-so-good memories first.
